Dry eye disease
Dry eye is a chronic condition affecting more than half a billion people worldwide.
While mild and transient forms of dry eye can be improved with artificial tear eye drops, 30 million people in the US are affected by a severe form of dry eye disease with strong T cell induced inflammation. 1 million of these patients in the USA are currently being treated with anti-inflammatory drugs – either Restasis® (cyclosporin) or Xiidra® (lifitegrast). Incidence for dry eye disease increases with age (>35% of the patients are over 70), thus constituting a severe problem for the aging population in the western world.
